Cucumber - West Indian Burr Gherkin (4" pot)
Cucumber - West Indian Burr Gherkin (4" pot)
This is an incredibly resilient plant. If you're like many who struggle to grow cucumbers, this is the one for you. Extremely heat tolerant. This guy was giving us fruit in July last year. And we have seen minimal caterpillar or powdery mildew presence. This was a volunteer that popped up in our back yard one year and completely took over without any extra care. The fruits have serious burrs though, like actual spikes. They are perfect golf-ball sized. Harvest young, then use a vegetable peeler to get them off so you can enjoy the fresh, crisp cucumber that we crave in the Florida summer heat.
Grown Organically from seed in our nursery.
4" pot
Full Sun
Plant February - November
Pest/Disease Management: Does need to be protected from caterpillars, particularly when young, which can be done with hand picking or selectively spraying with organic caterpillar treatments. We use BT (sparingly) for caterpillars. Resistant to most mildews but may still occur. We treat with a spray of half water and half milk for mildew.
